A warm, comfy, practical idea for a souvenir from Japan

Marude Kotatsu Socks (まるでこたつソックス)

During winter, my feet always feel icy cold. If you have the same problem, I want to recommend the Marude Kotatsu Socks. These can also be a nice practical souvenir for anyone with cold feet.

Marude Kotatsu Socks (Gray)

These socks have been quite popular in Japan over the last few years. “Marude Kotatsu” means “just like a kotatsu.” Do you know what a kotatsu is? It’s a piece of traditional heating equipment used in Japan. It’s a low table with a heater and is covered with a thick blanket. Many Japanese people love the kotatsu because it’s warm, comfortable, and relaxing.

Now, you understand why the socks are so popular. The difference from any other socks is their warmth, and the technology used in these socks is the key to this warmth. The socks are knitted in a special way that stimulates tsubo (acupuncture points) in the ankles (specifically the Sanyinjiao point). In Eastern medicine, the Sanyinjiao point improves circulation, and the socks help warm your feet by stimulating those points. Their material also helps generate and retain heat. (Although it says “kotatsu”, the socks don’t have a heater.)

I have two pairs and wear them when it gets cold. Before I tried them, I wasn't sure if they would really warm my feet, and I was skeptical when my mom recommended them. In spite of my doubt, they gently warm my feet and help me get a good night's sleep. They are so soft and comfy.

I do need to mention one drawback: pilling. The socks pill very easily. Since I wear them at home, I don’t personally mind.

How much do they cost?

They cost about 2,000 yen (depending on where you buy them, though). I thought this was a little bit expensive for a pair of socks, which is why I hesitated at first.

Where can you find them?

You can easily find them in many places: Loft, Hands, Donki (Don Quijote), and drugstores (Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Welcia, Tomod’s, etc.)

The sizes 23-25 cm and 25-27 cm are available in a variety of colors. The socks are intended to be worn in a room, not for going outside. It is recommended to wash them in a net and not to use a dryer.

If you're looking for a Japanese souvenir that offers a daily dose of comfort, a pair of Marude Kotatsu socks would be the perfect candidate!
